Braille Institute

Anaheim

Three times a year, the Braille Institue in Anaheim offers a 15 week series of gardening classes to people who are legally blind. Topics include: introduction to gardening, basics of soil, day lilies, propagation, vegetables, herbs, palms, interior plants, bulbs, container gardening, pest control, annuals, begonias, ferns, roses, orchids, spring gardens, and scented geraniums or any gardening subject a volunteer thinks might be interesting to the students.

Centennial Heritage Museum

Santa Ana


	The Centennial Heritage Museum is a natural and cultural history center dedicated to preserving, promoting and restoring the heritage of Orange County and the surrounding region through quality hands-on, educational programs for students and visitors of all ages. It features a diverse 11 acres of property including several structures and gardens, including the Kellog House and the Maag House. The Kellogg house is a restored "city" house built in 1898. Children can take hands-on tours to see how people lived and played in the olden days. Master Gardeners are developing an historical flower garden around the house. The Maag House is a "country" house, built in an orange grove. When it is restored, it will contain history of the citrus industry in Orange County. Master Gardeners will be researching and developing a curriculum for this project.

Casa Romantica

San Clemente

Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens was built in the late 1920's as a second home for Ole Hanson, one of the original developers of San Clemente. It sits on a two-acre blufftop lot overlooking the ocean and the San Clemente pier. The building has undergone major renovation and is now open on a limited basis as a Cultural Center as well as available to rent for private events.

Fullerton Arboretum Children's Garden

Fullerton

The Children's Garden at the Fullerton Arboretum is a wonderful opportunity to bring the joy and excitement of gardening to children. The area is specially designed with flowers, plants and vegetables just for kids.

During various public events throughout the year, Master Gardeners set up and operate gardening-related sessions where children learn about aspects of gardening. At the recent annual "Spring Fling", children had a chance to plant their own marigolds, learn about caring for them, and take the plants home. All plants and materials are donated.

Hortense Miller Garden

Laguna Beach

The Hortense Miller Garden is a 2 1/2 acre garden begun over 40 years ago. Tours are free and are run in the morning, Tuesday through Saturday. Master Gardeners serve as docents.

Mission San Juan Capistrano Gardening Angels

San Juan Capistrano

The Mission Gardening Angels group meets once a week on Wednesday mornings and Master Gardeners work in conjunction with this group. The Mission is located at the corner of Ortega Highway and Camino Capistrano in San Juan Capitrano.

Newport Back Bay Restoration Project

Newport Beach

The restoration effort includes several small projects that will require the removal of invasive weed species, the planting of coastal sage scrub and long-term monitoring of restoration success. Potential projects include developing a working native plant nursery at the site.

OC Fair & Event Center Centennial Farm

Master Gardeners help out with many areas at the Fairgrounds and Farm including: Composting, Docents, Front Gate Landscaping, Office Landscaping, Vegetable Gardens, Xeriscape Garden and Signage.

Orange County Great Park Farm & Food Lab

The Farm and Food Lab garden contains twelve themed gardens:
a Pizza Garden, Square Foot Garden, Herb Garden, Edible Garden, Butterfly Garden and more! The garden beds were designed, planted and are maintained by UCCE Master Gardeners.

Phoenix House

Santa Ana

Founded in 1967, Phoenix House is the nation's largest nonprofit organization devoted to the treatment and prevention of substance abuse - treating nearly 5,400 adults and adolescents each day at more than 80 programs in eight states.

Master Gardeners have been working with the adolescent group there for more than 2 years. The volunteers teach residents, ages 13 to 18, to learn to love gardening and nature. The residents put in their own vegetable gardens and assist with landscaping activities.

The Ranch

Costa Mesa

The Ranch is located on the grounds of the Orange County Fair and Exhibition Center. We work with fourth and fifth graders from the Davis School, across the street from the fairgrounds. The kids spend approximately an hour each week learning about gardening, and another hour learning about livestock, nutrition, leatherworking, and other agricultural topics.

Master Gardeners teach the children how to garden. Each child has an 8' x 8' plot to tend. They haul soil, measure their plots, plant seeds, propagate from cuttings, transplant, and compost in the process of becoming enthusiastic gardeners.

Sherman Library and Gardens

Corona del Mar

Sherman Library & Gardens is a 2.2 acre Corona del Mar horticultural retreat. The Gardens provide a museum of living plants, displayed amidst a setting of immaculate gardens, patios and conservatories linked together by wide brick walkways, beds blooming with seasonal flowers and bubbling tile fountains. The Library is a specialized research center devoted to the study of the Pacific Southwest.

Master Gardeners are part of a team of over 150 hardworking, dedicated volunteers that help wherever needed, tending baskets and flower beds, working in the greenhouse and acting as Docents to provide educational tours of the Gardens.

UCI Arboretum

The Arboretum of the University of California was established for the purposes of teaching, research, and public education.

The goal of the Arboretum has been to develop outstanding collections of plants especially suited to the Mediterranean climate characteristic of southern California.

South Coast Research and Extension Center

Many projects, both ongoing and seasonal, utilize Master Gardener support. Persimmons are pruned, grafted, thinned. Volunteers help maintain colonies of Red Imported Fire Ants for teaching and research. Avacodos are grafted to rot resistant rootstock and monitored.
